San Diego Craft Beer Mama

San Diego Craft Beer Mama, Rachael Akin from Benchmark Brewing Company

Rachael AkinI popped into Benchmark Brewing Company for the first time EVER to chat with the always amazing Rachael Akin.  I had heard nothing but awesome things about Rachael so I was so eager to meet her and check out the Grantville brewery.  Her warmness, the interior of the brewery and the family friendly vibe was a few, out of several things that I loved about Benchmark.  I had had the the IPA, which was SO TASTY , and I am looking forward to coming back for some more indulgences.

What was the first beer that you tried? Oh my God! I don’t know!  Maybe a Coors Light out of my Dad’s fridge or a Corona or something like that…..

What is the last beer that you had? I was drinking Get On the Bus last night.

Your morning drink of choice? If I am out partying, I would have an Irish Coffee, but normally it’s just Black Coffee, roasted by Matt!

What do you wear to work? Jeans or shorts and a T-shirt

Best part of your job? Getting to go to the grocery store On Tuesday in the middle of the day

Worst part of your job? I don’t know…like the hardest thing is managing people, you know. The worst thing?  I don’t know.  Going to the bank?

Favorite beer brewed? Personally?  I made an Quinoa Brown ale that leaned toward a porter

What is you guilty pleasure? Hmm…. I’ve been binge watching Gilmore Girls

What is your biggest fear? I don’t know.  I really don’t have…..I don’t know….

What is your biggest Achievement? Becoming a Certified Interior Designer was a huge big deal

As a child, what did you wanna be when you grew up? When I was really little, I think I wanted to be some kind of artist. And when I was in high school, I was going to be a professional stage manager, which I was for awhile and I loved it, but that hours sucked.

Who is your biggest influence in your life? Gosh, I don’t know. My family.  My decisions are based a lot on my family.  My parents, my grandparents. But professionally, Ray and Charles Eames are huge influences and I hugely respect what they did for design.

Favorite Curse Word? Oh, I say FUCK a LOT!

Name and Age of your babe: Neva, 2 1/2

What was or is your biggest fear about being a mom: It’s just hard, you know. Not being myself anymore.

What is your favorite time of the day? I like Right before dinner time. Before the sun goes down, kind of hanging in the backyard.

One word that describes how you do it all: That’s really hard. I don’t know…..I don’t, is the real answer. Being flexible.

What is one selfish thing you do for yourself I take the yoga class at the brewery every Saturday

Kids are in bed-what do you do Lay on the couch with beer and bad television

Kids are awake-what to you do Whatever needs to get done

What is one thing that you would tell your younger self?  Travel more.

Oregon Beers or Colorado Beers Oh that’s tough. I feel like I am a little not as up to date as I ought to be, but I kind of lean towards Colorado

Android/IPhone IPhone

Cats/Dogs Dogs. Big Dogs

IPAs/Stouts Depends on the beer

North Park/North County North Park

Wings/Nachos Nachos are meatless so those

Date Night in/Date night Out I aspire to have date night out but practically, being in these days, is what I want. Alone in my house.

Chocolate/Cheese Oh that’s hard….Cheese!

And Lastly, What is one thing that you hope your kids learn from being raised in the brewery and in the beer industry? —What do you hope is their take away?? I hope that she sees an all inclusive industry and I think that we have that and we are lucky to have it in San Diego, as a newer brewing town. And I hope that she sees Matt and I with some good self reliance.

Max loved Benchmark too!

Happy Max
